cubing (cube-ing): solving a Rubik's cube, as quickly as possible.
Richard Tao is a passionate speedcuber who has been cubing for 6 years, placing 26th at the 2025 World Championships.
Then came the realisation: many people around him, including friends and adults, simply viewed the Rubik's cube as a cool party trick; the best-selling puzzle of all time since its invention and popularity from the 1980s; most of all, a puzzle many people deemed impossible to solve.
That is, until they saw it done, and tried learning for themselves. The world of cubing is much more than the way 6 colours pattern 26 pieces come together. It's a process of developing resilience, focus, and social skills which anyone and everyone can learn from.
At the heart of cubing are competitions: the determination to be faster and better than you were last time is what drives your motivation. Competitions are also places where cubers (most of whom are introverted) thrive in socialising with fellow cubers.
So what better way to promote and grow the local cubing community than teaching the youth.
Cubing East Auckland is a group of high school students advocating for the local cubing community and promoting the activity to the next generation by running cube clubs. Our members are:
